Meet Scotty Corbin & Visit Sleepy Hollow: Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts, Franklin
Overlook Theatre Company’s multi-talented Director Scotty Corbin gives us a behind-the-scenes look at how Washington Irving’s chilling Halloween tale (performance of the play will be Oct. 25-26, see below) will unfold and how Overlook creates their magical productions, with some of the show’s 44 cast members adding to the afternoon’s fun. Corbin, the Center’s Artistic Director, taught drama at Franklin High and Macon Middle Schools and has spent much of his life on and behind the stage. Light refreshments served. Desmond, who lived five years in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, shares cultural insights and introduces his collection of traditional Bhutanese arts and crafts, some of which are intricate religious artworks that follow centuries-old traditions. Storyteller and retired Buddhist nun Lama Yeshe Palmo presents two-part “Tales of the Thangkas” Oct. 19, 2:00, and Oct. 25, 4:00. his memoir-in-stories of the scenes, characters, and community of Carden’s childhood and formative years in Franklin and Western North Carolina.

Franklin authors Claire Suminski and Henrietta Haithcock present “Animal Stories for Families #5: It Takes All Kinds.”
A homeschool mom, Sumiski began writing to share family stories and adventures with more children and help fuel their love of learning, penning the “Cowee Sam” books, among others. Visit suminskifamilybooks.com. Retired teacher and former NC Agricultural Extension agent Haithcock’s many hobbies include writing children's short stories; her first book was “The Secret Life of Mr. Brownie.” Both events are in the Macon County Public Library. Refreshments will be served; authors are available for book signings and sales. Phone the Library for information, 828-524-3600.

The Council announces our brand-new publication, “River of Love,” an anthology of author-selected short stories, poems, excerpts from larger works, and visual arts created by more than a dozen Macon County writers and artists, all reflecting the love theme. The project was managed and prepared for publication by Merritt Newman Shaw. Free copies will be available soon at the Council office, Macon County’s Public Libraries, and other distribution sites; contact us for details, [email protected] or 828-524-ARTS.
